Sleep apnea is a sleep disorder in which a person's breathing is repeatedly interrupted during sleep. This happens when the brain and the rest of the body do not get enough oxygen, which affects functioning. The most common people at risk are those who are obese or have diabetes or thyroid or have a BMI of more than 30.
Apart from these, people with facial deformities and children with tonsillitis can also suffer from it.
There are some tests that help in the diagnosis of this disorder. If you snore loudly while you sleep and / or feel tired even after a full night's sleep, you may have sleep apnea. It is advisable to visit your nearest doctor and get a checkup.
Dr. Swapnil Mehta, Consultant in Pneumology and Sleep Medicine at the Narayana Superspeciality Hospital, in Gurugram, comments more on sleep apnea and its causes.
