Simultaneous Pancreas/Kidney Transplant Cures Firefighter of Type 1 Diabetes

Gary Fritz had been living with a diagnosis of type 1 diabetes for 20 years. Multiple daily injections and blood sugar tests interfered with their normal routines. Gary started falling asleep at work as a heavy equipment operator. His local doctor in Littletown, Pennsylvania referred him to the transplant team and was added to the transplant waiting list. In three months, Gary received a simultaneous transplant of pancreas and kidneys to restore his kidney function and cure him of diabetes forever. The Transplant Division of UMMC is one of the few centers that perform simultaneous transplants of pancreas and kidneys for patients with type 1 diabetes.
