The Nutrition Therapist shares 11 foods that will help you sleep better

(Natural News) In a recent study, it was revealed that at least 38 percent of people in the United Kingdom lack sleep, and women between 35 and 44 were the most affected. The survey analyzed sleep habits in 14 countries and, according to the results, the British were the worst sleepers.

Listed below are some foods that can promote sleep. This list was compiled by Rick Hay, nutritional therapist and weight control professor at the School of Naturopathic Medicine (CNM) in London.

1. Green, black and white tea: some foods contain certain amino acids that can help people sleep because they nourish the nervous system. One of those amino acids is L-theanine, also known as "the relaxation amino acid". It is found in green tea, black tea, white tea and green matcha.

2. Chamomile: a versatile tea, chamomile has several benefits. It has anti-inflammatory properties, can help heal wounds, prevent diabetes, cure colds and can even improve cardiovascular health. Chamomile also contains a flavonoid called apigenin that has anti-anxiety properties.

3. Cinnamon: cinnamon nourishes the nervous system as it calms blood sugar levels.

4. Ginger – Ginger calms the stomach through a chemical called gingerol, which helps with stomach contractions. Ginger is also a great general tonic for the nervous system.

5. Licorice: naturopaths use licorice as an herbal medicine for depression and anxiety. It is also a tonic of the adrenal glands. Suprarenal tonic herbs or plants help nourish the adrenal glands and soothe an exhausted system.

6. Fruit of passion: together with the passion flower, passion fruit has traditionally been used to soothe the nervous system. The passion fruit and passion fruit contain a compound called harman, which has a hypnotic and sedative effect. Harman has also shown that it decreases anxiety and the quality and depth of sleep.

7. Lucuma: a South American subtropical fruit, the lucuma is full of nutrients. Lucuma balances blood sugar because it has a low glycemic index (GI). Having a low GI helps balance blood sugar before going to sleep at night.

8. Baobab: the baobab is a rich source of vitamin C, potassium and B vitamins. B vitamins are necessary for the healthy functioning of the nervous system, and the lack of them can cause problems such as insomnia and depression. Meanwhile, potassium can help you stay asleep.

9. Lemon, lime and blood orange: lemon, lime and blood orange are rich in vitamin C. In addition to being a boost to the immune system, vitamin C also nourishes the adrenal glands. By maintaining the adrenal glands, the system calms down. This can help relieve anxiety and stress that can cause insomnia. Some studies also show that the lack of vitamin C could contribute to the loss of sleep.
