ONLY ONE DIODE SODA ONE DAY CAN TRIPLE THE RISK OF CODE AND DEMENTIA
For some people, there is nothing like a diet cola soda on a hot day: satisfying noise when you pull the eyelash, refreshing fizz that dances on the tongue, sweet and delicious taste.
And best of all – it's calories and no sugar, so you do not need to feel bad about drinking, right?
Unsweetened diet drinks "are not healthier than the sweetest alternatives"
It's nothing new that diet sodas are not good for us, but a new study has confirmed how unhealthy they are.
According to a study of 4,372 adults at Boston University, diet sodas are more likely to cause strokes and dementia than sugary alternatives.
In fact, adults who drink a can of diet soda a day are three times more at risk, the researchers found.
It all comes down to an ingredient called aspartame, which is used in most diet drinks to sweeten them.
Aspartame, as well as other artificial sweeteners including saccharin, has been found to constrict blood vessels, which can ultimately cause dementia and stroke.
The 4,372 participants were all over 45 years of age and their food and drink intakes were measured over ten years.

The study found that adults who consumed one or more daily drinks a day were three times more likely to have strokes and 2.9 times more likely to develop dementia than those who did not drink nearly any.
Matthew Pase, a researcher with the Department of Neurology at Boston University School of Medicine, said: "Our study demonstrates the need to investigate further in this area given the frequency with which people drink artificially sweetened beverages.

"In our study, three percent of people had a new stroke and five percent developed dementia, so we're still talking about a small number of people who develop stroke or dementia," explained Pass.
