Is The Paleo Diet Good For Diabetes
Download Diabetes Management Book:
Hello, I am Ty Mason from TheDiabetesCouncil.com, researcher, writer and I have type 2 diabetes. Today I will answer the question, is the Paleo diet good for diabetes. But before you get into that, be sure to download my free diabetes management book, which also includes a guide to grocery shopping for diabetes (foods to eat and avoid).
This is the third question I have received about diets. If you have not already done so, you can check our videos about the local diet and vegetarian diet. Today we are going to examine the Paleo or Caveman diet.
So I guess the logical place to start is what is the Paleo diet. The name itself gives us some indication. "Paleo" means old or old. So in a nutshell the Paleo diet leads its followers to eat the way it used to be. In other words, you do not eat processed foods. A list of Paleo-friendly foods would include:
Lean meats, Fish, Seafood, Eggs, Vegetables, Some fruits (The berries and fruits less sugary are the best), Nuts in moderation (not peanuts) and Natural oils (olive oil, coconut and avocado
For the strict follower of the Paleo diet, this means that there are no dairy products or grains. Legumes are also not considered part of the Paleo Diet.
The theory behind the Paleo diet is that it turns your body from a burning burning machine into a burning fat machine, causing significant weight loss. In other words, the Paleo diet is very similar to any other low carbohydrate diet in theory.
There have been many studies that praise the low-carbohydrate, high-fat diet like Paleo. The problem with those studies is that they were short-term. Until recently there had not been a long-term study on the effects of these types of diets.
But, Albert Einstein College of Medicine decided to do a year of long study on the effects of a low-carbohydrate diet and a low-fat diet and make a comparison. In conclusion, our study shows that among overweight patients with type 2 diabetes there was no significant difference in weight or A1C change in participants after a low-carbohydrate diet compared to a low-fat diet for 12 months . Participants in both arms achieved a mean weight reduction of 3.4% but did not reduce A1C. The differences in the short-term effects of each diet were not maintained. "
Is the Paleo Diet Good for Diabetes? Like any other low carb diet, it may be, but there is a risk factor for ketosis in addition to the psychological game that these type diets play in that can be frustrating. I will not say they are bad for you, but I would not recommend it.
If you choose to try this diet I would suggest that you fill the nutrient gaps, with supplements including folate, B vitamins, calcium, and vitamin D.
I hope this answers your question is the Paleo diet good or bad for diabetes. Do not forget to get your diabetes management book.
