Bending down and looking at our phones for several hours increases tension in the neck and spine, causing neck and back pain. Experts refer to this condition as text on the neck and can lead to serious consequences.
In addition, at night, when we stare at our smartphones, the light emitted from their screens makes our brain think that it is still daylight. Therefore, our brain does not produce the sleep hormone melatonin, which makes us stay awake for long hours and, therefore, disturbs the circadian rhythm that regulates the bodily functions of each day. This can lead to obesity, diabetes, cancer, etc.
An interesting fact is that the addiction to smartphones has led to a new phobia called Nomophobia, short for no phobia to mobile phones. It's basically the fear or anxiety of being without our phone.
