Speaking of hospitals … the nervous pain caused by diabetes can be serious, constant and difficult to treat.
Fortunately, a recent study shows that treatments using electroacupuncture could help reduce them.
Park Se-young has more.
About ten to fifteen percent of Korean adults suffer from diabetes, and peripheral neuropathy is the most common complication.
The high level of sugar in the blood damages the structure and function of nerve tissues, which causes pain and difficulty sleeping.
Now, the Korean Institute of Oriental Medicine has discovered through clinical research that treatment with electroacupuncture effectively reduces pain and helps patients sleep better.
"Patients who received the treatment for 8 weeks showed twice as much pain reduction as the control group."
The test included 126 patients with type 2 diabetes and a history of at least 6 months of painful diabetic peripheral neuropathy.
The patients were randomly assigned to a group receiving acupuncture treatments twice a week or to a control group.
Electroacupuncture offers a safe and effective way to treat persistent pain, without the use of medications.
The study was published in the journal Diabetes Care.
