There's nothing like the smell of cinnamon when a batch of fresh, hot cinnamon rolls are taken out of an oven. But this tasty little spice does much more than evoke sweet aromas and tempt your taste buds. Consider these extraordinary health benefits of cinnamon.
Cinnamon has been much appreciated since antiquity. You can find references to it in the Bible and in the Egyptian papyri. And, in an era in ancient Rome, cinnamon was considered more precious than gold. In fact, this little spice was so precious that wars were fought for it. Today, however, the value of this sweet and tasty herb is not found in the coin, but in the amazing health benefits of cinnamon supplements, powders and essential oils.
Cinnamon controls blood sugar. One of the best known benefits of cinnamon is that it helps lower blood sugar and fight diabetes. A systemic review of cinnamon revealed that it reduces fasting glycemia, reduces hemoglobin A1c levels, increases circulating insulin levels and protects against diabetic neuropathy (pain and numbness of the diabetic nerve). And, research shows that eating cinnamon with a meal loaded with carbohydrates can help prevent spikes in blood sugar. (Therefore, if you eat toast, be sure to sprinkle some cinnamon on top).
Cinnamon decreases cholesterol and triglyceride levels. Research has shown that cinnamon reduces "bad" LDL cholesterol and triglyceride levels, making it excellent for the prevention of cardiovascular disease.
Cinnamon acts as an antimicrobial. It has been shown that cinnamon fights several pathogens, such as bacteria, parasites and fungi. Protects against gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria strains. It also kills the yeast Candida albicans and inhibits the action of fungi such as ochratoxin A, which causes massive health problems in humans when consumed in foods such as corn, wheat and cereals. And, interestingly, it has been proven that cinnamon kills mosquitoes.
Cinnamon reduces blood pressure. The exact mechanism of reducing blood pressure of cinnamon is still unknown. But the results of animal studies have indicated that cinnamon regulates blood pressure levels through peripheral vasodilation (the widening of blood vessels to increase blood flow).
Cinnamon improves memory and cognition. In vitro and in vivo studies in animals and humans have shown the beneficial health effects of cinnamon in the increase of cognitive function. One of the reasons why cinnamon can help improve cognition is that it reduces insulin resistance, and insulin resistance can lead to memory impairment.
