If you have not managed to lose weight by dieting and exercising, it may be time to consider an alternative treatment that promises quick and remarkable results. Gastric bypass surgery, which helped patients lose an average of nearly 65 pounds in 2015, is one of four popular procedures that help people struggling with weight loss overcome it. In fact, the gastric bypass has the greatest success and the lowest complication rates of the four weight loss surgeries.
That said, here are the physical and Medicaid requirements to qualify for gastric bypass surgery.
The physical requirements for gastric bypass surgery
Having a BMI equal to / greater than 40 or weighing over 100 pounds of overweight To qualify for gastric bypass surgery, you must meet one of the following three physical requirements.
Have a BMI equal to / greater than 40 or weigh more than 100 pounds of overweight
Have a BMI equal to / greater than 35 and at least two conditions * related to obesity
Inability to successfully lose weight and maintain it with standard methods of weight loss
* Common conditions include type II diabetes, hypertension, heart disease and other disorders that affect the respiratory system and the gastrointestinal tract.
It is important that you first try traditional methods of weight loss before resorting to gastric bypass surgery. However, if everything else has failed, the next step is to talk to your doctor to determine your eligibility and an action plan. Once you have qualified physically for gastric bypass surgery, you should check if your insurance covers it.
The Medicaid requirements for gastric bypass surgery
The coverage of Medicaid gastric bypass surgery is different from that of other insurance plans. In addition to not having medical problems that could prevent you from having surgery, you must meet these two requirements for Medicaid to cover and pay for your weight loss procedure.
First, you must meet ALL of the following criteria:
Gastric bypass requirements
Over 13 years old if you are a woman; Older than 15 if you are a man.
The BMI must exceed 35 with at least one chronic condition *.
If you are under 21, your BMI must exceed 40 with at least one chronic condition *.
Have a printed letter from your doctor recommending the surgery.
Pass a mental health exam that shows you can make the necessary changes in lifestyle to lose weight.
Documentation that shows that you have tried traditional treatment methods and was not successful.
Complete a medically supervised program that covers six months for weight loss.
* Common conditions include type II diabetes, high blood pressure, sleep apnea, and high cholesterol
Second, gastric bypass surgery must be performed through the Center for Excellence. This ensures that the surgeon and the office perform at a high level of treatment and that you will receive the best possible results.
